BOPP capacitor film edge quality matters because a narrow web can carry slitting damage directly into metallization and winding. A roll may meet average thickness requirements while burrs, edge waves or width variation create local instability at the element edge.
An engineering plastic film manufacturer should receive the slit width, winding tension, metallization pattern and defect position with the enquiry. Dafu lists ultra-thin capacitor film in 2–4 μm grades; at these gauges, incoming inspection should include edge condition as well as bulk film data.
Define the Edge Defect before Changing Film
Separate a raised burr from a feathered edge, edge wave, nick or width variation. Record whether the defect exists on the incoming mother roll, after customer slitting, after metallization or only after winding. Each stage points to a different process owner.
Use magnified images with a scale and note which side of the web is affected. Map the defect along the roll and compare left and right edges. A continuous problem differs from damage that repeats at one slitter circumference.
Connect Edge Quality to the Next Process
During metallization, an unstable edge can affect masking, margin consistency and web tracking. During winding, local edge thickness or waviness can build into a hard band or telescoped element. The relevant inspection therefore follows the web through both stages.
Keep slit-width measurements, edge images and winding observations under the same roll identifier. Do not average away the worst lane when several narrow rolls come from one parent roll.
Control the Trial Variables
When comparing slitters or film lots, hold blade type, overlap, web tension, speed and environmental conditions constant. Change one factor at a time and retain short samples from the start, middle and end of each trial roll.
Send Dafu the target gauge, slit width, metallization route, winding speed, defect map and failed elements. This allows the team to review whether the issue relates to film handling, slitting settings or the selected grade.
